system protection
P&E has experience with a very broad range of system protection equipment and configurations both new and old. We can help you upgrade your existing electro-mechanical protection to microprocessor systems. Our new design work for transmission, generation, and distribution has spanned all range of voltages up through 500 kV. Our protection system department also has years of experience interfacing protection schemes with some of the largest utilities and transmission system owners in the country. We are experienced in programming custom PLC implementations all the way up to the latest relay protection schemes. We have the experience to navigate the unique challenges of large distributed generation systems, including analysis and mitigation of harmonic issues.

P&E's engineers complete a wide array of studies and analyses related to the above design work including but not limited to: short circuit, load flow, system expansion, economics, losses, grounding, harmonics, EMTP, switching transient, insulation coordination, arc flash, relay coordination, overhead line sag calculations, ampacity calculations, and capacitor/reactor sizing.
We offer these studies in conjunction with project design services, on an individual basis, or as part of an independent engineer's review.

We excel at detailed design and our electrical drawing packages are noted for completeness and level of detail. Our thoroughness and attention to detail results in construction job packages that can be built on time and with minimal difficulties. We are also known for successful integration of control schemes, protection schemes, and data acquisition systems.
data collection and substation integration
P&E's substation integration engineers bring a unique blend of both information technology and power system expertise to ensure your substation projects come together properly. We interface with testing contractors and IT departments to make sure that you get the data you need from your equipment and get it back to the people who need it and in the format your company uses. We have extensive experience interfacing with relays, meters, annunciators, generator controls, capacitor controls, harmonic filters, temperature probes, special protection schemes, PLCs, HMI, and existing SCADA systems.
renewable energy collection systems
P&E has been on the forefront of the modern resurgence of wind and solar power. Over the last 15 years we have designed some of the largest wind farms in the world. Our uniquely responsive design team quickly adapts and optimizes our designs to interface with the latest PV panel and turbine technologies. We also have longstanding relationships with collection system equipment manufacturers that allow us to tailor our designs to your exact needs. We are known for having some of the most detailed drawing packages and material lists in the industry. This makes your contractors and subcontractors work more predictable and the final product more standardized to your fleet. We do extensive work for general contractors and directly for owners.
transmission lines
For the last 25 years, P&E has been helping utilities with new designs, re-locations, re-poling, re-conductoring, and voltage upgrades. We will work closely with you throughout the design, permitting, bidding, and construction processes. We presently offer designs up to 345 kV.
expert analysis
Drawing on over 130 years of combined experience, P&E offers assistance with equipment failure analysis and accident investigations. We offer operational support to many of our clients. We also have experience providing independent expert witness testimony.
